Democracy is

Only an idea

If not defended

Valued by all

Hate is

Never only an idea

More like odorless gas

Must be contained

Here we are

Another moment

Speaking up

Is necessary.

When I see

Unnecessary talk

I want to scream

Like the baby

Who fights sleep

Even with full belly

And clean diaper.

I don’t scream,

but dip my feet

In the water again

Use my opposable thumbs

And attempt to unite

Call out

To no one

And everyone

“The game is rigged,”

They said.

“The game isn’t ours,”

They said.

“What if the game ends?”

I ask.

“What will you say then?”

Go back

To your important

The reality

We see and hear

Is too real

Too ugly

Too violent

Also odorless

Words are not

Instead, they are

An animating force

Keeping us
