Hank is a dark roast from local outlet, Catahoula Coffee Company, located on San Pablo Avenue in Richmond, California.

Hank is a big old dark roast. According to Catahoula’s site, the roast came from a “blown” batch of another variety. The name came from a barista’s mastif. The beans are Colombian. When I think of Colombia, I think of one of my former students. She was a former accountant who came to the U.S. for a better life. She was hoping to bring her daughter here. I know the Venezuelan migration crisis impacted Colombia. I also think of former Red Sox shortstop Orlando Cabrera, who joined the team in July and helped the Sox to the 2004 World Series title.

Hank has a velvety texture. Smooth and rich. It’s not an everyday type of bean. It’s too be savored. More of a weekend sip.

We were having breakfast. I made eggs and warmed some “croissant toast” (courtesy of TJs) but the 7 year-old refused to sit down. Mom was making French Toast with the aforementioned bread. I was hoping the child would sit down with me and eat. Sunday should not feel rushed, but perhaps getting dressed before noon is a good idea. At least before the “Grammy Zoom” time.

Then the coffee maker beeped. Hank was ready. I’d made an extra strong brew, after freshly grinding the beans.

I poured a cup. Wonderful aroma. I sat down and had a sip. Oh, Hank. Take me away.

Rating: 5 stars.
