Near Hercules (A Freeway Poem)

near Hercules

there is a shrine

off the freeway.

a shredded balloon

and left-behind flowers.

a reminder of death and ceremony.

near Hercules

there is a shrine

off the freeway.

noticed while sitting

in traffic.

A reminder of time,

of accident, of innocence.

Near Hercules

there is a shrine

off the freeway

getting dirty

in the hot sun.

I wonder

whose family

is missing someone…

hope it is

only one.
