If you’re in the mood to read six poems, here are six poems. If you prefer, call them moments. Or glimpses.

Some December Days

Some December days
You start out sleepy
And end up tired
You might get weepy
You might get wired

You may slalom your way to noon
You may trudge away at dusk
You may float in the morning gloom
Feel yourself a hollow husk

The winter sun low in the sky
Might blind a minute or two
But lift the foot then let it fall
Spring, in time, renews.

Sun Keeps Slipping

Has anyone else noticed
The sun keeps slipping
Out of the sky?

Jam No Toast

How are you?
Not too honest now
Okay-good-fine-alright
Next line
Traffic jam no toast
Better you than me
Very little sleep
Should have eaten
10:30 pm angry stomach
Explain the “k” sound
English exceptions
Should have sleepwalked
5-year-old back to her room
Bad dream 3:00 am
Awakened by poster falling off wall
What tomorrow will bring
2:39 pm traffic with jam
No toast
Almost there
Almost broken
Almost healed

Middle Age

He thought the idea of middle-age
Was a ridiculous notion
Which presumed an expected number
Of years from life as if
Life owed any of us anything
The undeniable truth
Was that averages always involved
More than one number
And that a life was always lived
By one person
For an unknown time
A person known or unknown
And the more people thought they knew
About where they were going
And what was coming next,
The less they actually did.

Snowsemite

Found beauty out there
Next to winter river
Silent sunshine
After many snows
Holding not forgetting
Memory as restoration

Gratitude

How many days
Do you imagine
How most of your ancestors
Didn’t have what they needed
Most of the time
Maybe food maybe love,
Maybe trust maybe money,
Maybe friends maybe safety,
Maybe jobs maybe health,
Maybe mustard maybe pickles,
Maybe sunshine maybe tickles
And here you are
‐Maybe you have enough‐
In a culture that insists
You always need more.
